Counterfeit Money

There have been some counterfeit $20 and $10 bills distributed through the City of Harrisonburg as well as the entire Shenandoah Valley. Take the time to examine each bill you receive and consider the following:

  • When comparing money in question, look for differences, not similarities
  • Invest in a counterfeit pen but don’t rely solely on this
  • Hold the bill up to light to detect the watermark
  • Examine the serial numbers to ensure they match
  • Be leery of individuals purchasing a single inexpensive item with a large bill
  • If an individual passes a counterfeit bill; write down a description of the person, a vehicle description, and license plate if possible

For more information contact the
United States Treasury at: http://www.ustreas.gov/

If you suspect you have received counterfeit money in the City of Harrisonburg please contact the Harrisonburg Police Department at 540-434-4436.
